Burrowing Parakeet or Patagonian Conure

Cyanoliseus patagonus

The Patagonian Conures are also known as Burrowing Parakeets because they can burrow up to 6 feet into the side of a cliff or a bank in order to build their nest. These are large conures that look somehow similar to macaws.

They are native to central Chile and the northern and central parts Argentina. They inhabit open country and especially like areas around water. These birds are social. They like to be in large groups and nest close to each other.

In captivity, they can learn to talk, although with a harsh voice.

The above picture was taken in the Attica Zoological Park, Athens, Greece, in June 2007.
