Haliaeetus leucocephalus
This animal features in a United States national emblem. Bald eagles live exclusively in North America, and build one of the largest nests in the world, weighing around two tons and measuring 10 feet in diameter! They feed primarily on fish, but will not refuse to catch other birds, if needed. Their population was brought to the brink of extinction by the second half of the 20th Century, but has steadily recovered since then after certain plans were implemented (the United States "Endangered Species Act" of 1973).
The above picture was taken at the Attica Zoological Park, in Athens, Greece, in July 2009.
