Larger Emu

Dromaius novaehollandiae

This is the second largest living bird (after the ostrich), with a height of around 1.75 m (6 ft). Emus live in Australia. They cannot fly (their wings are hardly 20 cm long), but they can run as fast as 50 km/h (30 mi/h). They have three toes on each foot, contrary to the ostrich, which has only two. They take their name from the call of the male which sounds like "e-moo".

The above picture was taken at the Melbourne zoo, in January 1995.
