White-cheeked Gibbon

Hylobates concolor leucogenys

White-cheeked gibbons have their color depending on whether they are male or female: males are black with white cheeks (leucogenys = white-bearded), while mature females are beige-white, like the lady of our picture (Cincinnati zoo, May 2001).

Gibbons are sometimes called lesser apes, being closer phylogenetically to the great apes, but smaller in size.
