Cacatua goffini
The Goffin’s Cockatoo is endemic to forests of the Tanimbar Islands, in the archipelago in Indonesia, where it feeds on maize crops and roosts in the forest. Due to hunting and loss of their natural habitat, nowadays there might be more Goffin’s cockatoes living in captivity than in the wild.
This is one of the smallest of the white cockatoos. The ones that are handreared from hatching can learn to imitate the human voice. Like most healthy cockatoos, the Goffin’s cockatoo produces a calcium-based powder on its skin, used to help it clean its feathers.
The above picture was taken at the Attica Zoological Park, in Athens, Greece, in July 2008.
