Greater Indian One-horned Rhinoceros

Rhinoceros unicornis

The Indian rhinoceros is found in Nepal and in Assam, India. It is confined to the tall grasslands and forests in the foothills of the Himalayas. The Indian rhinoceros is an excellent swimmer. It can also run up to 55 km/h (35 miles per hour) for a short time. It has excellent hearing and smell but poor eyesight. Less than 2000 individuals remain in the wild, and the species is an endagered one. Indian rhinos are hunted for their horn, which some cultures in East Asia unfortunately believe that it has healing power.
