Red-flanked Duiker

Cephalophus rufilatus

The Red-flanked Duiker lives in western and central Africa. It feeds mainly on leaves, twigs, flowers, and fruits, although sometimes it can also eat some small animals.

This is a shy animal, rarely seen in the wild. The common name “duiker” (pronounced dy-ker) is Afrikaans for “diving buck”. They dive for cover with head down at any sign of danger.

The picture of this duiker was taken at the zoo of San Diego, California, in March 2004.
