All existent patterns for masculine-gender nouns in Modern
Greek are listed below. Each pattern includes as examples one
noun stressed on the ultima (last syllable), one
stressed on the penult (second syllable from the end),
and one stressed on the antepenult (third syllable from
the end). If one or more of these three cases is missing, then
there is no such example of stressing within that pattern in the
language.

difference between the two examples stressed on the penult (άντρας
and κανόνας) is in the plural genitive: αντρών has
its stress descend to the ultima, whereas κανόνων retains
it on the penult. The difference is that άντρας has two
syllables (άν·τρας), whereas κανόνας has three (κα·νό·νας).

(1) Note: the plural of
this noun is very rare. It is given here according to the
contracted form of the ancient word, but it is probably safer to
say that it does not exist, because most native speakers would
claim they have never seen it before. One reason is that the word
νους is old/formal, and can be replaced by the more common
μυαλό (pl.: μυαλά), a noun of neuter gender. If the
need ever arises (e.g., in an academic or formal text), the
singular form νους can be used as a substitute for the plural
(cf.: ο νους των ανθρώπων, lit.: the mind of
humans).

(1) Note: this pattern is
actually one that comes from ancient adjectives ending in -ις,
with two genders, masculine and feminine.
(2) Note: "lover"
in the sense of, for example, "lover of sports"; not
sexual lover.
(3) Note: Since this
pattern comes from an adjectival one, there is a corresponding
feminine form, usually called also η λάτρης, or
alternatively, η λάτρις.

form of this word is αγώνας, which follows the pattern ending in -ας.

to "Platos" in general (abstracting to the generic
features of the philosopher Plato).
