Without the ability to properly access this type of equipment, people can find themselves hindered by their disability and unable to make the best use of their skills. This creates a negative and unacceptable situation personally and professionally. For this reason, accessibility is crucial to one's ability to use today's technology to its fullest so that they may have the same opportunities as those without disabilities.

When it comes to computers, assistive software is one of the most important tools that people with certain disabilities can rely on to improve their computing experience. Assistive software uses various technologies to overcome a need or obstacle that is created by one's disability. For individuals who are visually impaired, for example, there are screen readers that speak out the text on a screen and dictation or speech input software that they can use to speak text to a computer. Other examples include word prediction software and speech synthesizers that enable people with speech issues, such as world-famous theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, to communicate more clearly.
